When I say the Chips Quinn Scholars program made me the man I am today, it’s not hyperbole. Through the program, I landed my first out-of-state internship, which turned into my first full-time job.

Twelve months later, the program introduced me to the woman who would become the love of my life. This April, we celebrate 10 years of marriage. I’m forever grateful.

While I’m truly thankful for a career that has allowed me to work as an editor, social media manager and columnist, serving as a voice for those in our nation who have long been unheard, my proudest moment occurred just a few years ago, when my wife and I were invited to a Chips Quinn spring orientation to lead a writing workshop in Nashville, Tenn. That simple act of giving back – helping to guide a new generation of journalists – meant more than any award or accolade I’ve received in my 15-year career.

That spirit of service and mentorship is the hallmark of the CQS program and has continued to define me as a journalist and as a man.
